November 3, 2010: Our Beloved, Rudolfo "Boo-D" Alapag Passes

This afternoon at 2:28 pm local time, our beloved father passed away. He is no longer in pain and is with the Lord. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Love,
Chad

Update: November 2, 2010

In preparation for another round of plasmapheresis, Boo-D was fitted with a non-tunnel catheter today. When he returned from that surgery, his vitals were low. He had trouble breathing, blood pressure: 87/36, hemoglobin: 6.2, and blood sugar: 73.

He is currently in ICU where he is given medication to raise his blood pressure and to help his breathing.

Update as of November 3, 2010 @ 12:30 pm, Boo-D has started with a morphine drip to make him comfortable.

Please continue with your prayers for Boo-D.

Love,
Chad aka Number 2

Update: October 26, 2010

Today Boo-D's condition hasn't really changed much. He did have a little change in the routine today as he was sent to the Nuclear Medicine Department where they performed a test. The test was to scan the heart to check the ejection factor as a prerequisite for a new drug that the doctor wants to give.

Our family would like to thank the following friends and family for visiting dad today: Dong and Dory Unabia (family friends), Alice and Jun DeGuzman (family friends), Nick Saplad (nephew), Sheryl Oshiro (cousin), Andrew and Nita Saplad (uncle and aunt), and Ben Dalde (sister-in-law's brother). We greatly appreciate it.

Please continue to pray for him.

Update: October 25, 2010

Boo-D's status hasn't changed too much from yesterday. He has received another unit of blood as his hemoglobin is below 7. This loss of blood is due to the multiple myeloma (cancer of the blood plasma) choking the red blood cells that his body creates as well as the new red blood cells introduced from the blood transfusion. Currently he is on different medications to combat myeloma, low kidney functions, high blood sugar, and pain. Nona (wife) stayed over night to be by his side and continues to care for his needs with assistance from the nurses.

For more information on multiple myeloma:

By the way, his hip has been healing well.

This afternoon Nona, Guenevere (daughter), and Glenn (brother) met with the doctors to discuss the next steps. There is one option of an evasive procedure to clean out his blood plasma. We as a family are discussing the options with Boo-D.

Boo-D has been awake to greet visitors but the pain medication has him nodding in and out. I have been able to get a quick conversation out of him.

I was able to visit in the evening after work and to my surprise Boo-D had more visitors from out of state: Ren and Nancy Ross (uncle and aunt) from Nevada, Andrew and Nita Saplad (uncle and aunt), and Sheryl Oshiro (cousin) from Hawaii. We have had the continued support from Dong and Dory Unabia as well as Lu Rivera. I am also very thankful for all the nurses who have done such an excellent job in trying to make him feel comfortable. Thank you all for taking the time to visit with my dad.

Our family appreciates your continued prayers.

Update: October 24, 2010

When I arrived Sunday morning after church, Boo-D was looking a little more pale. Later the nurses told me that my dad's platelet levels were low and that he will be receiving another blood transfusion. The loss of platelets is a condition of having multiple myeloma.

After he was cleaned up, Boo-D went back to sleep. He began to snore so I took this to be a sign of a very restful deeper sleep. This was in contrast to what he did most of the time of the nodding on and off when I had previously visited him.

Nona, my mother, had arrived before noon as well as her sister Glecy and her family (Bert and Christina). He slowly opened his eyes and recognized them, but then quickly nodded off. Throughout the rest of the afternoon he had visits from his daughter Guen and her husband Johnny as well as visits from Nona's town mates and our family friend Lu.

I was told that later in the evening, he was sedated. He had been off the pain medication for the last few days, but the pain had returned to a threshold that required more pain medication. As for how long he will be sedated. I really don't know right now.

Nona felt that instead of going home to get some rest (as she usually did previous nights) she decided to stay at the hospital over night. She also mentioned that the nurses have been doing an excellent job in taking care of Boo-D overnight and that she wasn't awoken abruptly by Boo-D even while she was in the room.

On Monday, October 25, our family will be talking to the team of doctors to get a sense of whether the treatments have been effective and what the next steps to take.

Thank you all for love and best wishes for dad.

Chad

Update: November 3, 2010 Boo-D's Last Day with Us

Boo-D was kept overnight in ICU where they treated his low blood pressure, low hemoglobin, and low blood sugar. They gave him a vasopressin to increase his blood pressure. Boo-D was struggling breathing so they had to give him oxygen.

By morning, we were informed that when they tried to taper him off the vasopressin that his blood pressure dropped. We decided at that point, that we wanted to make him comfortable. It was then that a morphine drip was ordered.

At 12:30 p.m., the morphine was administered and at 2:28 p.m., Boo-D passed away peacefully.

We are making arrangements and will inform you of when the services for Boo-D will take place.

Love,
Chad
